Thermo Fisher Scientific, a global leader in serving science, turned to Bonfire Effect to create a modular visual system for their autoimmunity diagnostics solutions. The goal wasn’t just to drive awareness and demand for the company’s testing solutions. The new design system also needed to convey modern science while simplifying complex workflows and connecting authentically with patients.

The challenge
Visualizing the invisible—without using words
The primary challenge behind this project was to visually represent the advanced technology and life-changing impact of Thermo Fisher diagnostic solutions—without relying on copy.
Our solution needed to make the invisible visible—from internal patient symptoms and hidden biological triggers to the diagnostic complexity faced by lab teams. Existing visuals felt too sterile or clinical—ranging from obscure cellular imagery to generic stock photos. We needed to infuse genuine emotion—showing the connection between the patient, science, and technology.

The solution
Decoding complexity through meaningful design
We developed a bold visual system around “decoding the unseen.” Inspired by tools like 3D glasses, the creative metaphor spotlighted Thermo Fisher diagnostic solutions as the lens that brings clarity to hidden issues—empowering labs and improving patient outcomes.

This is perfection! THANK YOU and thank your team for sticking with it and getting these images to where they are today. I think we've ended with a wide range of disease state symptoms, patients' struggle captured, and the art direction is cohesive and fun.

The effect
A design system that endures
The visual system continues to serve as a core design language for Thermo Fisher autoimmune diagnostics. With its rich combination of color, human elements, scientific illustrations, and motion—it helps elevate engagement and make a complex story more accessible to both patients and lab professionals.
